Verizon has announced the winner of a challenge to create a green business idea that would be beneficial both to the environment and to Verizon. The winning idea was a recyclable phone that comes with a special “Green Alerts” add-on package that relays breaking news, updates, and information about environmental issues to Verizon customers. More than 100 students at the Boston College Carroll School of Management in a class about corporate social responsibility participated in the contest.

A new study finds that 65% of major Chicago area corporations plan to maintain or increase their corporate philanthropy in the coming year. The study, produced by strategic communications firm FD, shows that only 11% of companies will be reducing their philanthropy budget in 2010. Most of the projected philanthropy will be directed to social services and education, while environmental and cultural efforts are scheduled to receive significantly smaller donations.
