We have all heard and probably been told by an authority figure at some point in our lives: “You better get your priorities in order”. Did the resulting stress and pressure of that request get the intended result? Not likely. When it comes to transforming the organization, business sustainability action arguably should not be a priority.
In our sustainability consulting experience, prioritization implies a ranking of the things the company finds important by an eternal standard never fully understood or embraced by the organization. Applied to business sustainability action, this process creates a situation in which:
• Sustainability becomes something external: a task, a project, or even an added burden.
• Business sustainability actions are then compared to other programs and business improvements.
• The result can be an organization disinterested in sustainability concepts, as some choose other priorities.
