Operation Santa Declared Too Risky - US Post Office: Volunteerism Versus Risk Management

The US Postal Service recently declared Santa Clause to be unsafe for children. Forced to make a choice between risk management and the belief in everything good Old Saint Nick stands for, they decisively opted for the former. Volunteering, whether through non-profits or Employer Sponsored… Continue

Why Whole Foods gets low sustainable scores as one of the largest purchasers of renewable energy.

I found this interesting article at the Havard Business Publishing (great source by the way).

Why would a new Ceres report give low scores to Whole Foods, one of the nation's largest purchasers of renewable energy, for the way it is responding to the challenge of climate change?

Precisely for the word that Whole Foods… Continue

Should You Buy Your Own Bonus?

Here is an interesting scenario, what do you think you or your employees would have done?

If "Mary" donated $1,000 for a school to buy products, she would hit her million-dollar goal.

Mary Kantarian was achingly close to making her million-dollar sales goal — only $1,000 short. If she made the goal by the end of the year, it would mean a fat $10,000 bonus check, and a happy trip to the bank to finance a dream home she’d recently found. Other sales reps also were… Continue

Corporate Social Responsibility Reports Fail to Prove Business Case

Corporate Social Responsibility reports almost never include data that supports the business case for CSR strategies. Unless business can tie the benefits of CSR to the bottom line it will be jettisoned during tough financial times. Or worse, CSR will act as an enabler much like political correctness… Continue

Escaping Poverty through Women’s Empowerment, by Jack Gregory

gregoryj-11 Following the introduction to my new family, I was to start my internship with the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation (JBF) the next day. Abi, my co-intern, and I arrived in good spirits, ready for organizational integration. We immediately set out with Sateesh, who is responsible for the Agoli Block Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), to visit the Vishnu Nagar and Jashti villages. Our mode of transportation was an open-door jeep, which lacked seatbelts, but came fully equipped with a driver who… Continue

Erle Frayne Argonza

Magandang Hapon! Good afternoon!

Please know first that this writer/analyst is both (b) economist and (b) mystic-healer. For some time now, the challenge of contributing to the construction of an ‘economy that heals’ has been knocking at my ‘mental coconut’, a task that explains this article and many yet that will succeed this one.

As an economist, my lines of subspecializations are: (a) development economics, (b) political economy &… Continue

Save Darfur Coalition

Dear Development Crossing Community,

As a member of the Development Crossing community your convictions about humanitarian issues ring clear, so please allow me to get right to the point. The appalling genocide in Darfur continues – now in its sixth year and at the price of nearly half a million lives. Ironically, December 9th marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention, and Darfuri people are still suffering and struggling to survive. As the Obama… Continue

Erle Frayne Argonza

In the name of the Father (British oligarchy), the Son (Pakistan) and of the Holy Spirit (Afghan opium). So mote it be.

Pakistan and India are now on the verge of another war, one that will extend the frontiers of a brewing World War III to the South Asian corridor. Many are befuddled by the events in the region, the continuing animosities among the erstwhile ‘sibling’ neighbors, the latest terror attack on Mumbai, and more to come. Many in India and… Continue

Day to Day with the Centre for Women’s Studies, by Hanes Motsinger

“I just hope it was ok, I know it wasn’t perfect, I hope in the end, we can laugh and say it was all worth it…” – Ani Difranco
