Saffo's New Creator: Be Interactive. Be Personal.

Paul Saffo recently had an excellent article up on his site about what he calls the “creator economy,” which he believes is the new economic future. Here is my communication to him about the importance of creators and personability.

Dear Mr. Saffo,

I loved your article on “Creators.” As you state, creators are both producers and consumers, whereas in the past, markets were simply consumer driven, or producer driven. This new type of ‘creator’ is both, and requires a new type of interaction.

I… Continue

Oma, you're going to have to help me. Oma, please help me write this.

I said goodbye so many times, and had the privilege of doing so. And while I knew this was going to happen -- and while I had the luxury to have a woman that supported through the most arduous times at UniversalGiving, being one of my best friends, a confidante,

I was never prepared.

It was my honor to present at the Inter-American Development Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility Conference 2008, at Cartagena, Colombia, in December. I was privileged to spend the days prior volunteering with a crisis mediation center, an after school program, and a local skills center, which helped women learn how to cook, create and sell crafts, buy their first home, and which also operated as a tutoring center for kids and a retirement home for the elder… Continue

Hi Pamela. Today I spent several hours reviewing an older gentleman's water treatment technology and having read your material and looking at your website, I had a thought about how to tweak giving programs such as yours as a way to facilitate funding of socially advantageous projects or entities. Other than offering donors choices, what if donors were specifically asked to fund nonprofit socially advantageous startups relevant to their fields of business? For instance Coca Cola might fund innovative water treatment if the entity was established as a nonprofit.

I thought maybe there was a way to encourage innovation if donor's charitable contributions were specifically channeled into causes or entities that not only benefit them, but also directly benefit the public, which may also be a component of their customer base.

I suppose the point here would be for donors to encourage innovation instead of just contributing to stale programs that are locked in the status quo of administrative survival. I also thought that by funding entities in this way, it might help move society toward recognition of the value of removing the profit motive from business toward a more effective or efficient use of capital, but still provide for a stream of innovation with socially advantageous or altruistic motivations as a driver. I guess it would be something like "funding innovation through altruism." Enough for tonight. I am always available for strategy consulting or writing projects. Enjoy your endeavors. richard
