Dear Dr Rachel,
Thanks for your interest,

I am in eastern India in the state of Jharkhand. Our small group is trying to assist tribals of this state( which was initially a majority tribal population), to start their own enterprise as tourism and ther after small units related with it.
There are many beautyfull natural spots here where tourists would like to visit... but the Govt policy here is not people friendely.. They want that the business of tourism is controlled by some agencies from outside and locals are taken as employees. Our concept is that Tribal staying near those spots should totally control the busness and Govt or people from out side should only assist them.
We are arranging for infrastructure, and training.. Since Govt is not helping our idea and beaurocrates are finding it hard to digest the idea of empowering people at lower level...its a bit tough for us, but we will make it.
In our first project we have collected funds from our friends and made one resturant, cum kitchen.. and have made sales counter for local products. There is a lake and some boating facility is also available... about 25 youngsters are already trying to be a part of it.. and earn their living.
We are looking for some cheap boats... which will add to their earnings..
Later... we plan to help them plant fruit bearing trees... which will give them an extra item to sell direcetely at tourist spots.. with very good return.
Also helping them in fishery activities..
All togather in our first project a group of 263 memebers, are involved... Here in India 1 earning memebr supports approx.. 4 to 5 dependents.. so it will be a project to support more than 1000 rural youths , to keep it in their own village and earn living with dignity.

One more thing.... we are not giving funds as charity.. we have an agreement" that the finances are available to them interest free for 3-5 years, and with our assistance they have to generate fund and return it to us after tha period so that it can be used for some one else.

The project has been named as" Rural Entrepenure Developement Project( REDP)"

tahnks once again,

Dr Rachel,

I saw some posting which says that you are in Toranto. I may be visiting Canada in May/ June this year. I also once was lecturer in engineering university and would live to intract with your students about pro-poor,/ eco/ sustainable tourism.
Our group is very clear about one thing..... NO help needed from out side. Its an experiment with confidence to develope skills in locals, who are very honest to get their own ways for business. We are doing this as an experiment and will start at 3 more places where group is forming..

May be... we discuss much before that happens.

Namaste from India,

Hello Dr. Dodds,
I just created my profile here, and noticed yours as a fellow Canadian.

You may also be interested in joining the Canadian CSR and SD Practitioners Network on LinkedIn. I recently set it up as a forum for dialogue, information sharing, and networking among Canadians who are engaged in various aspects of sustainability and corporate responsibility in Canada.

Hope to see you there!
