An interesting discussion. I have been involved for a while with initiatives of addressing street life. I do not believe there is a simple fix. The street families are now at least two generations. When you come into contact with one street person...there is a community behind them. Work with them, let them eventually choose to leave street life existence...it will take a while...a lot of patience, dedication and consistent work.

Dear Justin,
Sure, thats is a great concern to almost most major cities here in Kenya. The numbers of street kids grow each new day. They are exposed to all risks available.

These kids can be gradually removed from the streets despite the threats from their fellow colleagues. The rehabilitation models employed will be the determining factor here, there are a few best practices how it can be done.Hope we can still share more on this.

Since those of you that are in this group must be pretty interested in this issue, could you share any insight you have into how this problem can best be addressed? I am observing this issue while I am in Mombasa. There are a lot of street children here, and I have been told that the problem has been getting worse.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to remove these children from the street because their peers will not let them leave. It is common to hear about a child being killed by other street children because that child wanted to leave the group. The groups do have some support mechanisms, but they can be ruthless in enforcing their will on all of the children in the group.
