Trends in online sustainability reporting - what do you want to know?

Hi all,

I was lead researcher on this project in 2009, and this year we're repeating the exercise to try and build up a picture of what's going on in terms of online sustainability reporting.

What do you think?  And what kind of information would help deepen your understanding of sustainability reporting online?

Cheers

Ben

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for engaging- but I have to say I don't entirely follow what you mean! Could you explain in a bit more detail please?

Thanks

Hi Ben,
How about a more in-depth investigation into how Social media networks and tools are used?

Picking up on Mitch's point .. Are there any directives within the new ISO standard that might implications for online CSR reporting?

Just been reading last year's report.. Great job. Look forward to reading your updated findings...
cheers,
Mickey

Thanks for the feedback, Mickey.

We're certainly going to be on the lookout for social media tools in this round of the research - though if the last round is anything to go by, it's not being used widely for sustainability reporting, where the pdf is still king! It's something we'd love to see more of - though I'm not sure it's there at the current time.

From what I've seen of the ISO standards, there's nothing in there on online reporting - but I'll double check this before we embark on the research in earnest.

Cheers

Ben

Since the ISO Standards have not been issued yet - it would not be too difficult to add "online" reporting as a necessary quality - remember the ISO 26000 Standard is only a guideline - it is our intention to both publicize this and to make it much more than what the designers intended. I envision the world community jumping on Board - just because it is there and has a four year development history - it speaks to the now of International demands for CSR , trust , and responsibility.
If you could share your research with us - perhaps we might make a strong casde for "ONLINE" stuff.

I have looked into this a bit and have learned most companies (Fortune 500) are Reporting online in their CSR and as we note below MolsonCoors is doing so - and feeling concerned about it from a credibility point of view.
for me the notion of credibility is havig online reporting rather than printing a number of materials that serve few purposes other than being costly. I do confess my business card does not meet this standard!

certainly the ISO 26000 Standards will become the world standard and these networks ought to be helpful in bringing life to the Standards.

Peace
Mitch

Molson Coors made the decision to only do online sustainability reporting. At first, we received some concerns about not having a printed report -- was a web-based report as credible? We added a report-writing function that assembles web-based data into a pdf file and ensured that we had accessible data and policie. That addition seemed to satisfy analysts who needed something to hold onto, while also ensuring that all our data and narratives were developed and published in one place, which could be updated real-time. We will be publishing our 2009 results in the next few months, have major refresh of the site planned for later this year. In the meantime, take a look at www.molsoncoors.com/responsibility and let me know what you think. Cheers! Bart

Hi Barton,

Interesting approach - our consultancy is working on a couple of similar projects this year. This sort of innovation is exactly the kind of thing we'll be looking out for in the next round of the research too, so watch this space!

Thanks for the contribution,

Ben

Wow! looking at the working papers for ISO 26000 it's going to be a big money generator for ISO standards consultants.

The mission; to develop an International Standard providing guidelines for social responsibility (SR). The objective is to produce a guidance document, written in plain language that is understandable and usable by non-specialists, and not a specification document intended for third party certification is admirable, but reading just a few of the working documents seems to be going off track. It looks like it will be enormous. Working documents

If you are after guidance, what is wrong with a one pager that costs nothing?

I think your idea makes sense - care to take a crack at it? I challenged myself to write a promotion concept that will get the ISO 26000 Standards into the Boardrooms of the World.

A one pager Play - in Shakespeares Words - while it does not address the guidelines - it does address a process for meeting the need of making it public.

My friend Bob White is presenting the introduction Program in Mexico this coming March - he sold it without the one pager. but if you want to see his presentation - I'll get permission to publicize it.

Hmmm, you didn't click on the link? Here it is again. One page of CSR guidance. Happy to offer a 4 point decision flow diagram on it's practical implementation within business and a more sophisticated integrated online tool designed to reinforce, measure, and track it's success, within the corporate community.

Love to see another attempt at a one pager. Your Friend Bob must be a persuasive person.

Hi Greg:

your approach certainly resonates wth myself - however I am no sure how it will fit with Bob:

you have a next step to integrate?

by the by - we have established a project - Heart of Africa Campaign - to awaken compassion in the creative city - your one pager fits well with in our marketing strategy - what role do you see yourself playing in the delivery and promotion of the ISO 26000 Standard - perhaps you and Bob might collaborate? let me know of your interest

Peace
