As a thoughtful observer, you are aware that Gender equality is central to realizing Millennium Development Goals. Gender equality will not only empower women to overcome poverty but also their children, families, communities and countries. Women empowerment through micro financing has been an agenda of development discourse. Women empowerment through SHG based micro finance has been central to development agenda in India. Government of India has also paid special attention to women’s empowerment. Women’s empowerment encompasses their enhanced status in social, political and economic spheres. Though, micro credit for poverty reduction has been accepted as a major tool in development discourse, however, women’s empowerment through micro credit programmes has been limited. Several studies have highlighted that micro finance initiatives and programmes have created opportunities for women for their overall socio-economic empowerment. However micro financing programmes and schemes could not be effective due to several constraints, challenges and problems. In order to examine these constraints and challenges, and also suggesting appropriate strategies and approaches for empowering women through micro financing, a threadbare deliberation and discussion is imperative.
In view of the above backdrop, a Two-day's National Seminar on “Women Empowerment Through Micro Financing” is planned to organize on August 8th & 9th, 2009 at Ahmedabad (Gujarat). The seminar has been sponsored by Planning Commission, Govt . of India The thrust areas of the seminar include (1) Concept, Models and Bank Linkages (2) Growth and Development of Micro Financing (3) Programmes, Schemes and Projects of Women Empowerment through Micro Financing (4) Role of Stakeholders and Micro Financing Institutions
(5) Impact of Micro Financing on Women Empowerment and (6) Micro Financing Initiatives and Best Practices.
