Each year Migratory Birds stop over Lebanon, before they continue their long tiring trip between Europe and Africa. Lebanon is blessed as it lies on one of the major flyways for millions of migratory bird species. In order to honor these creatures, the Society for the Protection of Nature-SPNL celebrates yearly the miracle of migration through the World Bird Migration Festival announced globally by BirdLife International. Through a fund provided by OTI Lebanon, SPNL is celebrating this year festival in partnership with Anjar & Kfar Zabad municipalities, and in collaboration with Lebanese Adventure in Hima Anjar/Kfar Zabad wetland which is recognized internationally as an important bird’s area (IBA).
This festival aims to enlighten the public in general and children in particular on this intriguing aspect of bird behavior, and the importance of those small creatures in sustaining our natural ecosystem. SPNL hopes to increase the individual’s affection and appreciation of these beautiful creatures, introduce the public to Anjar/Kfar Zabad wetland, protected under the Hima “community based approach”, and to support rural ecotourism, as an income generating resource for the local community.
So, here comes the moment to enjoy culture, birds and nature. After a long tiring week, it’s the time to take a fresh breath and enjoy a refreshing breeze, and loosen up your mind, body and soul embraced by the spectacular green valleys, caressed by Syrian serin and soaring birds, accompanied by river otters & jungle cats at play. It is there where you can learn about the Omayyad’s history and the Armenian culture. There, lies a heaven on earth, in the Bekaa valley where two villages hug each other through rivers and streams, masked with diversity in culture and nature; a heaven of land and swamps for birds, mammals, reptiles, & amphibians in the colony of humans. It is where Hima Anjar/Kfar Zabad lies!
